Once upon a time we enjoyed regular writing from members of our community. That has dropped off, but we'd like to keep their work available for future readers. Enjoy.

Created: 05 April 2010

We'll meet at 7pm April 19 in the Mississippi Room at the Great River Libary. Any atheist-friendly persons are welcome to join us. We'll be discussing progress in our Camp Quest sponsorship, a possible affiliation with Minnesota Atheists, and whatever else comes up. Our format is very casual. We hope you'll join us for some invigorating conversation!

Minnesota Atheists and Humanists of Minnesota will hold their semi-annual cleanup April 25, weather permitting. Our segment of responsibility lies immediately north of Rice on Highway 10. Traditionally, we meet for lunch at the Old Creamery, then head out around 1. Depending on the number of volunteers, it only takes an hour or a little more.

Check back for more details as they become available.

A 2007 Gallup poll found that 53% of Americans would not vote for an atheist for president.

The commonly held belief, here in the USA, that atheists, agnostics, secular humanists and the non-religious in general lack moral beliefs and a moral framework in their lives is distressing and harmful. Many atheists, agnostics, secular humanists and non religious people have a carefully thought out personal moral code that stresses honesty, integrity, care for others and critical thinking.

Many of us care very deeply indeed about the communities in which we live. We don't feel that it is necessary to believe in a God in order to behave in ways that show love and care towards others. We don't believe that people will only do the right thing when they are "forced" to do the right thing by the imposition of an external moral code.

There are many religious people who also believe in being "good" for the same reasons that non-believers do; namely that we feel compassion and empathy for others and we would like the world to be a better place for everyone.

So ... if you are a non-believer, then here is your chance to show the world that non-believers care about their community as much as believers do. ... and if you are a believer then here is your chance to help counteract the prejudice that non-believers are immoral and uncaring and to help build some community amongst all people, regardless of religious belief.

Cancer affects ALL of us and beating cancer is a team effort. Thank you for getting involved, either by donating money or by joining our team. We are SO excited to be doing this! If you get the chance, then stop by our team tent on Friday June 4th at ABTech in Asheville and have a chat with any one of our team members. We'd love to see you.
